Protect dealership profitability by reducing title risk — Vitu | John Brueggeman & Dave Spencer

Vehicle registration and titling have remained a persistent pain point for the auto industry, with delayed titles capable of tying up hundreds of thousands of dollars per dealership. On today’s episode of Driving Solutions, Vitu Chief Strategy Officer, John Brueggeman, and Vice President of National Sales, Dave Spencer, explain how digital titling is streamlining the entire registration and titling process, reducing fraud, and accelerating vehicle sales across the industry.

Vitu reached several significant milestones in 2025, dramatically expanding its industry footprint through the acquisitions of the Dealertrack Registration & Titling Businesses from Cox Automotive and DDI Technology from IAA Holdings, LLC. The company also broadened its lender and dealer network, strengthening its position across multiple segments of the automotive ecosystem. Vitu has delivered more than two million digital titles to dealerships, lenders, insurers, and remarketers. Looking ahead, the company’s mission is to continue building the “rails” by connecting the vehicle industry ecosystem from state systems to client transactions to enable greater functionality and more seamless nationwide adoption.

Digital titling is often an overlooked aspect of dealership operations until a problem arises. Delayed or missing titles can stall funding, disrupt inventory flow, and create challenging situations for customers, all of which can negatively impact CSI scores. This is especially critical given the significant investment dealers make to acquire and retain customers.

"By digitizing the process, we eliminate wait times and add transparency so everybody knows exactly where they're at in the transaction at every point." — John Brueggeman

Strong registration and titling processes help dealers both make and save money. When issues surface, they are often traced back to gaps in process or accountability. Vitu’s approach focuses on closing those gaps through a combination of technology and service designed to protect long-term dealership profitability and reduce operational risk.

According to the company, Vitu is saving the industry millions of dollars annually. On average, dealers using the platform save approximately $241 per acquired vehicle, compared with an industry average range of $69 to $75 per transaction under traditional processes. These savings compound quickly at scale, particularly for high-volume operators.

"Digital titling reduces fraud and increases speed. With speed comes profitability." — Dave Spencer

Digital titling is also reshaping pre-owned operations. Selling a vehicle without a confirmed title in hand poses a significant risk, especially when relying on a title that is still in transit. If a title is delayed or lost, it can halt a transaction, delay remarketing, and create exposure across funding, compliance, and customer satisfaction.

Despite advances in technology, digital titling has taken time to gain widespread adoption. Similar to the transition from paper certificates to digital systems in the securities industry, moving vehicle titles into a fully electronic environment requires substantial infrastructure, coordination, and regulatory alignment. Federal legislation enabled electronic titling more than a decade ago, but implementation continues to progress state by state.

Today, several states operate digitally through the Vitu platform, while many others still rely on paper-based, manual transactions. That balance is expected to shift. Vitu estimates that within the next three years, 15 to 20 new states will implement electronic registration and title programs, with many also incorporating electronic lien and title capabilities during that same period.

To support adoption, Vitu provides on-site training and ongoing support for dealership titling staff, recognizing the importance of consistency and education in a role often affected by turnover. The company emphasizes a high-touch service model alongside its technology to ensure accuracy and continuity.

Digital titling is no longer just a back-office function. It has become fundamental to dealership operations, risk management, and profitability as the industry continues its shift toward faster, more transparent transactions.
