Ford prepares EV owners for winter weather with these expert tips 

Stay ahead of the cold this winter and keep your Ford EV running at peak performance with simple, expert-approved preparation tips.

  • To protect your EV and optimize battery performance, park it in a garage or a covered area, and remove any snow.
  • Before driving, precondition both the battery and the cabin, and keep the vehicle plugged in for extended parking.
  • To maximize range and safety, use the heated seats and steering wheel.

As below-freezing temperatures arrive, Ford offers guidance to help EV owners maintain performance, efficiency, and safety during the winter months. The following tips apply to all Ford EVs, including the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E, and focus on battery care, drive modes, energy conservation, and general winter vehicle preparation.

Tip one:

Whenever possible, park your EV in a garage or covered structure to shield it from extreme cold. This helps maintain battery performance and cabin temperature. However, owners without garage access should look for covered parking or spots exposed to morning sun.

Tip two:

Snow and ice should also be removed entirely from the vehicle before driving to reduce weight, improve aerodynamics, and ensure visibility. Ford’s driver-assistance systems rely on clear sensors and cameras to function properly.

Tip three:

Ford EVs come with specialized drive modes to optimize performance in winter conditions. The 2025 F-150 Lightning features “Slippery Mode,” which adjusts accelerator responsiveness and traction control to prevent wheel spin on icy or loose surfaces. Mustang Mach-E owners are encouraged to use “Whisper Mode” in slick conditions to provide gradual deceleration and smoother acceleration. Drivers can also choose between one-pedal and traditional two-pedal driving depending on road conditions.

Tip four:

Keeping the vehicle plugged in while parked for extended periods helps maintain battery temperature and prevent range loss. Preconditioning the cabin and battery via the Ford app ensures optimal performance before driving or charging. Notably, during DC fast charging, the battery will automatically warm within 20 miles of the charging station, improving efficiency.

Tip five:

Using heated seats and steering wheel rather than high cabin heat conserves battery power. Reducing the use of climate control during charging sessions further improves efficiency.

Tip six:

Tire maintenance is also critical because properly inflated tires enhance grip and maximize range. The automaker recommends limiting speed where possible, as higher speeds can reduce range in cold weather.

Additional tips and support

Ford offers accessories such as the Charge Port Weather Kit to protect the charge port from harsh winter conditions. Owners can also access 24/7 EV support via text for guidance or troubleshooting. Vehicles equipped with Ford’s Vapor Injection Heat Pump (VIHP), standard on 2025 Mustang Mach-E and 2024+ F-150 Lightning models, automatically optimize cabin heating while reducing energy consumption.
