Gary Coxe on how to shatter limiting beliefs that hinder performance

Deeply ingrained fears and past traumas can significantly hinder performance and erect mental barriers that seem impossible to overcome. In today’s Mind Your Own Business episode, Gary Coxe joins host Jonathan Dawson to share advice leaders can implement to help their teams navigate and overcome limiting beliefs.

Coxe notes that individuals often know what they need to do to see results, but they usually struggle to do it. Often, there is some emotional trauma or fear that creates a limiting belief that holds people back.

Digging deeper to pinpoint where the limiting beliefs are coming from is essential for personal growth. It’s also equally important to evaluate the tasks’ value or overall importance.

To coach their teams to a higher level of performance, Coxe advises that leaders must identify the mismatches in their team’s belief systems and value levels to foster meaningful change.

To start, leaders must build a rapport with their team to establish trust and genuine care. Once rapport is established, leaders can initiate a direct conversation with their employees to dive deeper into the reasons behind their hesitation to uncover what is creating the pattern of avoidance or fear.

Leaders can implement strategies for sustained change by helping their teams build momentum through small actions. Starting small allows individuals to get exposure to what they’re afraid of. The more that they do it, the easier it becomes. These incremental actions build momentum and allow team members to associate these actions with positive outcomes to counter past negative experiences.

Coxe emphasizes that the most critical part of facilitating growth is fully committing to consistently investing in a team. Leaders must actively work to create an environment that encourages vulnerability, accountability, and continuous learning.

Coxe’s advice provides a clear roadmap to success and underscores leaders’ critical roles in their team’s development. By addressing mismatched values and beliefs, leaders can inspire transformational change within their teams to drive success.
