Toyota recalls nearly 394K vehicles due to rearview camera issue

A software issue may cause rearview camera glitches, reducing rear visibility and raising collision risk.

Toyota is recalling 393,838 vehicles in the United States due to a software issue that may prevent the rearview camera from displaying an image, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Tuesday. The glitch reduces drivers’ rear visibility, potentially increasing the risk of a collision.

The recall affects several models, including the 2022-2025 Toyota Tundra, Tundra Hybrid, and 2023-2025 Sequoia Hybrid.

The affected vehicles are equipped with a 14-inch multimedia display that displays the rearview image. When the camera view is changed, it can cause the synchronization signal that’s connected to the cameras to pause. When this happens, the screen may display a half-green, full-green, or black screen instead of the rearview image when the driver backs up, increasing the risk of a collision.

Every recalled vehicle was programmed with the defective software, and dealers will update the display software for customers free of charge. The new software will also contain other improvements.

Notifications to dealers were sent out Oct. 1, and vehicle owner notification letters will be mailed by Nov. 30. The NHTSA recall number is 25V657.
