Toyota, GM dominate 2025 Free Press awards with hybrids and EVs

With announcements for the North American Car, Truck, and Utility of the Year awards coming on January 10 at the 2025 Detroit Auto Show, the spotlight remains on these groundbreaking models.
According to the Free Press Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards for 2025, Toyota and General Motors earned top honors.

According to the Free Press Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards for 2025, Toyota and General Motors demonstrated the power of strategic planning and advanced engineering, earning top honors.

The Toyota Camry and Tacoma were named Car and Truck of the Year, while the Chevrolet Equinox EV secured Utility of the Year, showcasing the industry’s steady march toward electrification.

These winners represent three of the most sought-after vehicle segments: midsize sedans, midsize pickups, and compact SUVs. All three models are competitively priced and designed to appeal to mainstream buyers.

Toyota Camry: Car of the Year

  • Base Price: $28,400 (excluding destination charge)

The 2025 Toyota Camry redefines the midsize sedan with hybrid power standards across all trims. Its 2.5L hybrid engine delivers robust performance, offering up to 51 mpg combined fuel efficiency. This model’s sleek, modern styling and advanced safety features depart from the “boring” reputation of previous Camrys.

Even the sportiest version, the XSE AWD, achieves an impressive 44 mpg. Inside, drivers will appreciate physical controls for climate and audio, further enhancing usability.

  • Second Place: Honda Civic Hybrid (Base Price: $28,750) – With 200 hp and 49 mpg, the Civic Hybrid stands out as one of the most powerful and efficient Civics ever.
  • Third Place: Kia K4 (Base Price: $21,990) – The compact K4 combines striking design with affordability, though it lacks hybrid options.

Toyota Tacoma: Truck of the Year

  • Base Price: $33,700 (excluding destination charge)

As the first hybrid midsize pickup in the U.S., the Tacoma sets a new standard with its I-Force Max hybrid powertrain, delivering 326 hp, 465 lb-ft of torque, and a towing capacity of up to 6,000 pounds. Its EPA-estimated fuel economy outpaces competitors like the Ford Ranger and Nissan Frontier.

Notable features include a 14-inch touchscreen, connected navigation, and off-road enhancements such as 33-inch tires and monotube shocks.

  • Second Place: Ford Ranger (Base Price: $32,980) – The Ranger shines with its 400-hp Raptor model and advanced off-road capabilities.
  • Third Place: Ram 1500 (Base Price: $43,025) – The Ram gains efficiency with a turbocharged inline-six engine and offers hands-free highway driving technology.

Chevrolet Equinox EV: Utility Vehicle of the Year

  • Base Price: $33,600 (excluding destination charge and tax incentives)

The Chevrolet Equinox EV is a game-changer in the compact SUV segment, offering more than 300 miles of range and a starting price that’s competitive with traditional gas-powered rivals like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. Eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit, it combines affordability with cutting-edge EV technology.

The Equinox EV’s bold styling, spacious interior, and Tesla-compatible charging network make it a standout. However, the lack of Apple CarPlay support is a notable drawback.

  • Second Place: Hyundai Santa Fe (Base Price: $34,200) – With a boxy new design and enhanced cargo space, the Santa Fe offers a hybrid option and third-row seating.
  • Third Place: VW ID Buzz (Base Price: $59,995) – This nostalgic electric minivan charms with its design but falls short on range and pricing.

Electrification continues to shape the market

The success of these award-winning vehicles underscores the growing influence of electrification in the automotive industry. Whether through hybrid systems or fully electric powertrains, automakers embrace innovation to meet evolving consumer demands. With announcements for the North American Car, Truck, and Utility of the Year awards coming on January 10 at the 2025 Detroit Auto Show, the spotlight remains on these groundbreaking models.
