EVs and hybrids shine in IIHS 2024 Safety Awards

The IIHS has announced its latest safety award winners for 2024, highlighting strong performances by electric and hybrid vehicles.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has announced its latest safety award winners for 2024, highlighting strong performances by electric and hybrid vehicles in its rigorous testing protocols. Among the top honorees are the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Rivian R1S SUV, both receiving the coveted “Top Safety Pick+” designation.

Joining these electric standouts are hybrid models like the Mazda CX-70 Plug-In Hybrid, Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid, and Toyota Crown Signia Hybrid, showcasing the growing commitment to safety in electrified vehicles.

2024 Safety Award Winners: A Breakdown

So far in 2024, 48 vehicles have earned the “Top Safety Pick+” rating, while 56 vehicles have been awarded the “Top Safety Pick” rating. The winners are predominantly foreign-made vehicles, but domestic automakers also earned recognition with models like the 2024 Ford Explorer, 2024-25 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and 2024 Jeep Wagoneer.

Testing Criteria

To qualify for 2024 safety awards, vehicles must achieve the following:

  • A “Good” rating in the small overlap front and updated side tests.
  • An “Acceptable” or “Good” rating in the pedestrian front crash prevention evaluation.
  • “Acceptable” or “Good” headlights across all trim levels.

Additionally, the IIHS reviewed seat belt reminder effectiveness and the ease of use for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) systems. However, these elements were not factored into the final awards.

However, not all vehicles excelled in testing. The 2024 Cadillac Lyriq failed to qualify due to poor headlights, while the 2024 Ford Bronco Sport was disqualified by an “Acceptable” rating in the updated side crash test.

Looking Ahead to 2025

IIHS plans to tighten its criteria further. The first wave of 2025 “Top Safety Pick” winners will be released in March. As automakers continue to innovate in safety technology, these awards remain a benchmark for excellence and a critical consideration for consumers who prioritize safety in vehicle purchases.

With electric and hybrid vehicles earning accolades alongside traditional models, the industry is making strides in delivering safer options across all powertrains.
