Why ‘your mindset determines your trajectory’ – David Meltzer | Sports 1 Marketing

Show me the money! If you’re familiar with this line, chances are you’ve seen the 90’s blockbuster film, Jerry Maguire. The inspiration for the film was David Meltzer’s agency at the time, Leigh Steinberg Sports & Entertainment Agency. David is now the Co-Founder of Sports 1 Marketing, a three-Time international best-selling author, a Top 100 business coach, keynote speaker, executive producer of the #1 digital business show, Elevator Pitch, and the host of the top entrepreneur podcast, The Playbook.

Meltzer grew up in a low-income household with six kids and a single mom who worked hard at two jobs. He says that his journey really began by watching his mom pursue her ambitions and find her truth. What she wanted was to empower children through her jobs as a teacher, principal, mother, and Sunday school teacher.

After Meltzer completed law school, he entered the business and was a part of the $3.4 billion Thompson Reuters merger in 1995. He would then go on to be CEO of Samsung’s phone division in 1999. Meltzer says that his career has always been about skills, knowledge, and desire. He teaches people that their skills and knowledge will only determine how far they can fall, but the desire that Meltzer’s mom had, and the desire that he surrounds himself with determined his potential.

Then Meltzer met Leigh Steinberg and landed the job of CEO for the Leigh Steinberg Sports & Entertainment Agency. He credits his wide-ranging technical background for this achievement. Today, he is the Co-Founder of Sports 1 Marketing with Warren Moon.

However, catastrophe struck during the 2008 recession, he went bankrupt and the $100 million fortune he built vanished. He had to build it all back and along the way, he discovered three guiding principles that he shares with his audience:

  1. You have control of your mindset
  2. You have control of your heartset
  3. You have control of your handset

Meltzer also recommends partnering up with a mentor. “The fastest way to get where you want to be is to ask directions from someone that’s already there,” says Meltzer. Meltzer has mentors for the four necessities of life: nutrition, hydration, breathing, and sleep.
