Kia and Hyundai recalls over 200,000 U.S. EVs due to power issues

Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia are recalling over 200,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to safety concerns, including power loss in EVs and faulty transmissions.
Hyundai, Kia, Genesis recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall of specific electric vehicle (EV) models from Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis due to a potential loss of drive power from damaged charging units that could increase the risk of collisions.

These malfunctions have impacted over 208,000 U.S. vehicles, including 62,872 Kia vehicles and 145,235 Hyundai and Genesis vehicles.

Kia advises that the owners of affected vehicles will hear warning chimes and see flashing warning lights if their car is affected. If that happens, the automaker advises owners to get the vehicle towed to their nearest dealership as soon as possible for service.

Dealers will inspect and replace the control unit, fuse as needed, and update the vehicle’s software. Vehicle owners whose vehicles were recalled earlier in the year for the same issue may need to revisit their local dealership once again.

The vehicle models listed in the recalls include:

Kia:

  • 2022-2024 Kia EV6

Genesis:

  • 2023-2024 Genesis G80 EV
  • 2023-2025 GV60 and GV70 EV

Hyundai:

  • 2022-2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5
  • 2023-2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6
  • 2025 Hyundai Tucson
  • 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz

In a separate notice, NHTSA also announced the recall of approximately 42,000 2025 Hyundai Tucson and 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz models due to faulty transmission mechanisms. This could shift the vehicle out of park without engaging the brake pedal, increasing the risk of the vehicle rolling away. To ensure safety, vehicle owners are advised to engage their emergency brake when parking the car until the issue is resolved.

The automakers will officially notify all vehicle owners via mail in December and January.
