Jonathan Dawson on amplifying team performance through clarity, efficiency and flexibility

Be a Gideon

In the Biblical story of Gideon, God chooses an unlikely Israelite hero to lead his people into battle. God instructed Gideon to reduce his army of over 30,000 soldiers to a small band of just 300. Despite fear, doubt and the odds stacked against him, Gideon led his men to victory.

The Pareto Principle, often called the “80/20 rule”, suggests that—in most situations—80% of the results are driven by 20% of the effort.

The story of Gideon and the Pareto Principle prompts an essential question: Where can you do more with less?

During COVID, many dealerships were forced to reduce their workforce. Despite there being tighter inventories and leaner teams, most dealerships experienced surges in profitability and vehicle sales.

Often, leaders hesitate to make cuts because they’re operating from a scarcity mindset. However, the concept of “being a Gideon” is about identifying top performers and maximizing output by eliminating underperformance and streamlining their efforts.

The Viox principle

The Viox principle, named after respected GM Jim Viox, is about establishing and maintaining clarity through simple, direct evaluation.

Viox is known for his straightforward leadership approach and his go-to performance question: “Knowing what I now know, would I still hire this person for this job?”

"You wouldn't hire them for the role, but you'll pay them every single month for that role, keep them in that role, and the question is 'why?'"

Many leaders struggle to evaluate long-term employees objectively. But this question, requiring only a simple “yes” or “no” answer, creates instant clarity. It eliminates ambiguity and fosters a workplace where everyone understands their performance standing.

Dawson encourages leaders to ask themselves this question monthly when reviewing their roster. More often than not, the answer will be “no,” and when it is, something must be done. He advises leaders to seek feedback from other managers, document conversations and collaborate with HR. When clear expectations are set, employees have the opportunity to improve. If a separation becomes necessary, it’s a thoughtful, documented decision, not one made in the peak of frustration.

Rigid flexibility

The principle of “rigid flexibility,” coined by Jim Frampton, encourages leaders to adopt structured processes while still accounting for the human element.

This means being rigid in standards, processes, policies and expectations—but flexible enough to allow growth, creativity and individual excellence. Great leaders strike a balance, and Dawson encourages leaders to self-reflect and identify areas where they can improve. 

Leadership that elevates the average

The best leaders with the strongest teams understand the importance of these guiding principles and how applying them can help accelerate performance and raise the store’s average.
