The BMW Group has released a spring update for its expanding lineup of electric vehicles, which includes adding a new i5 all-wheel drive model. The BMW i5 xDrive40 is scheduled to go into production in March as a 2025 model and will be priced in the range of the eDrive40 and M60 models.

The BMW EV portfolio includes the all-electric 5 series, which debuted last year as a 2023 model. The M60 variant, which offers greater performance, and the eDrive40 are the first two models in the lineup.

The new 2025 BMW i5 xDrive40 will go on sale in the U.S. with a starting MSRP of $70,100 plus $995 for delivery and handling. The 2024 i5 eDrive40 base model currently has an MSRP of $68,000, while the M60 starts at $88,600.

BMW chose not to release any pictures despite disclosing information on this third i5 model, but the following is what it will deliver:

  • Fifth-generation electric drive units with dual motor AWD
    390 hp
  • Maximum torque: 435 lb-ft
  • 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds.
  • 130 mph maximum speed and 84.3 kWh of useable energy
  • Rate of AC charging: 11 kW
  • Maximum DC charging power of 205 kW
  • 30-minute 10-80% recharge

The new BMW i5 comes equipped with Plug & Charge capability and five separate accounts that can be stored in its iDrive system from different charging networks. Spring will bring an over-the-air software update to BMW Operating System 9, which was previously 8.5 on the other i5 models, in addition to the release of the i5 xDriv4e40.

The update includes improved integration with smartphones, such as enabling iPhone users to use Siri voice commands and updating BMW Maps to display local charging stations more effectively.
