Mercedes-Benz warns chip supply issues could hit global auto production

Mercedes-Benz warns that chip supply disruptions from the Nexperia dispute could ripple across the global auto industry.

On the Dash:

  • Mercedes-Benz secures short-term chip supplies but says global auto production is at risk.
  • Dutch seizure of Nexperia and China’s export restrictions are creating industry-wide volatility.
  • BMW and Renault closely monitor suppliers, while automakers seek alternative solutions to maintain production.

Mercedes-Benz has secured short-term semiconductor supplies but warned that the global automotive industry is being affected by events surrounding Dutch chipmaker Nexperia. The Dutch government last month took control of Nexperia from its Chinese owner, Wingtech Technology, citing the need to protect Europe’s technological knowledge and capabilities. In response, China restricted exports of certain Nexperia products made in its territory.

According to reports, Mercedes-Benz said that Nexperia chips, which are used in components ranging from lighting systems to electronic control units, are critical across the industry. The automaker noted that its partnerships with suppliers, digitalized processes, and lessons learned from previous chip shortages helped secure short-term supply, but it emphasized that the situation remains highly complex and volatile, making long-term forecasts difficult.

Meanwhile, German peer BMW noted that it’s monitoring suppliers closely to identify potential risks early, while production at its plants continues as scheduled. French automaker Renault established a monitoring unit and maintains daily contact with suppliers to ensure continuity. Renault reported that the current impact is limited and affirmed that it will proceed with upcoming vehicle launches as planned. The company is actively addressing the issue through the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, which has engaged China’s Ministry of Commerce to emphasize the automotive sector’s critical reliance on Nexperia chips.

The dispute underscores ongoing geopolitical tensions between Europe and China over strategic technology firms and highlights the automotive sector’s vulnerability to semiconductor disruptions. Automakers are increasingly exploring diversified chip sources and local production to reduce exposure to such risks.

Moreover, industry analysts caution that prolonged restrictions could lead to production delays and increased costs across the European auto industry, reminiscent of the global chip shortages that disrupted vehicle manufacturing in recent years. Mercedes-Benz and other manufacturers continue to monitor developments and adjust sourcing strategies to mitigate potential impacts.
