BMW to integrate Alexa+ in infotainment systems in select models

The German automaker integrates Amazon’s Alexa+ voice assistant for more natural in-car conversations and advanced features.

On the Dash:

  • BMW will replace its current Alexa Custom Assistant with Amazon’s generative AI-powered Alexa+, enhancing in-car voice interactions.
  • Alexa+ can access over 70 large language models and continue conversations from other Alexa+ devices, enabling complex, multi-step commands.
  • The rollout, set to occur soon, though BMW has yet to confirm which models will receive the upgrade first.

BMW is set to be the first automaker to integrate Amazon’s next-generation voice assistant, Alexa+, into its vehicles. The upgrade moves the German automaker’s current infotainment system beyond the Alexa Custom Assistant, which allowed building AI assistants based on Alexa technology, into a generative AI platform designed for more natural, conversational interactions.

Although the automaker has yet to confirm which models will receive the upgrade first, the rollout promises a more intuitive driving experience. The Alexa+ enables drivers to issue more complex commands without being constrained by a fixed set of keywords.

For example, drivers could request a DC fast charger near a highly rated restaurant and simultaneously start a road trip playlist, with Alexa+ managing the multi-step task seamlessly.

Alexa+ leverages over 70 large language models (LLMs), and conversations initiated on other Alexa+ devices can continue seamlessly in the car. This allows BMW owners to maintain consistent, intelligent interactions across their home and vehicle environments.

BMW’s latest iDrive infotainment system is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and features a custom navigation system that serves as the foundation for Alexa+ integration. While other automakers, such as Volvo with its Google Gemini integration, have also introduced AI-based assistants, BMW faces additional complexity. For instance, Volvo seamlessly integrates its system with Google Maps and Android Automotive OS, while BMW uses its own customized platform.

Industry experts see BMW’s move as a major step forward for AI in premium vehicles. The generative AI platform enhances convenience, entertainment, and the overall in-car user experience, setting a new standard for competitors in the luxury segment.
