How dealers can foster a culture of true collaboration

Leadership is not about having all the answers, solving every problem, or dominating every conversation. On the latest episode of Lessons in Leadership, Leadership Expert and President of LearnToLead, Dave Anderson, breaks down the 12th commandment of his 15 Commandments for Organizational Peak Performance, which he says is to move past mere cooperation and embrace genuine collaboration.

According to Anderson, many executives mistake a quiet room for an aligned team and settle for a culture of simple compliance. When employees act like passive bystanders rather than active stakeholders, the burden of execution falls entirely on leadership. Involving team members in solving problems, shaping decisions, creating new offerings, and elevating the customer experience alleviates pressure on leadership while sharpening overall execution.

Crucially, collaborating does not mean relinquishing control. But rather, Anderson says that gathering input from team members doesn’t strip a manager of authority.

Embracing constructive conflict

Anderson also highlights that fear of disagreement often leads teams into dangerous blind spots. When teams make decisions in isolation without healthy pushback, they routinely fail because no one feels empowered to highlight flaws or propose better alternatives. To avoid costly missteps, he says, leaders must invite constructive tension into brainstorming and strategy sessions. By sharing an initial concept and encouraging the team to tear it apart, leaders ensure every angle of an issue undergoes rigorous scrutiny.

"Conflict ensure every side of an issue is being looked at an examined."

When leaders create an environment where employees feel safe raising their hands, pointing out potential pitfalls, and offering alternative solutions, the final strategy becomes significantly stronger. Anderson believes that involving team members early in the process creates a fundamental shift in workplace culture. When employees contribute their perspectives to decisions that affect their daily work, their commitment to execution deepens naturally.

By shifting from a top-down, command-and-control approach to a collaborative framework, leaders build resilient organizations driven by engaged, invested teams
