Ford’s new plant security measures spark pushback from UAW over worker discipline

The automaker says enhanced security protects employees, while union leaders argue stricter enforcement is leading to unfair terminations.

Ford's new plant security measures spark pushback from UAW over worker discipline

On the Dash:

  • Ford is increasing security at its manufacturing facilities, reflecting a broader focus on workplace safety following industrywide incidents.
  • The UAW says tougher disciplinary policies could heighten labor tensions as the company navigates ongoing contract and workforce issues.
  • Manufacturing stability remains critical for dealers as labor disputes or workforce disruptions could affect future vehicle production.

Ford has launched a 90-day K-9 pilot program at its Michigan Assembly Plant to detect firearms, explosives, and ammunition. This initiative is part of broader security enhancements that also include additional security personnel and upgraded surveillance systems.

The automaker implemented this program after receiving employee feedback and responding to violent incidents across automotive manufacturing facilities.

Notably, union officials say Ford’s expanded security efforts align with stricter enforcement of workplace policies.

Meanwhile, UAW Bargaining Chair Jim Fisher indicated that some employees have been terminated over administrative issues, such as delayed medical paperwork. According to a Ford Authority report, union representatives claim that workers with previously clean records are now facing harsher disciplinary actions than in the past. Additionally, Carl Kimbrell, an attorney for UAW Local 249, stated that Ford has routinely denied grievances that previously may have led to the reinstatement of employees. The union also criticized Ford’s handling of “quit notices,” alleging that some employees have been terminated after failing to respond while hospitalized or otherwise unable to reply.

Union officials argue that management has become less willing to consider mitigating circumstances during disciplinary reviews. In response, Ford rejected the union’s characterization of its disciplinary process. Company spokesperson Dave Tovar told the Detroit Free Press that the automaker complies with labor laws and its agreements with the UAW.

Nevertheless, the automaker emphasizes that it fully and fairly investigates every misconduct allegation while consistently enforcing company policies.
