Toyota invests $50M to expand Arizona Proving Grounds

The Japanese automaker is investing over $50 million in the expansion of its Arizona Proving Grounds, featuring new tracks and ADAS development space for future mobility testing.
Toyota North America is investing more than $50 million to expand its Arizona Proving Grounds into a next-gen vehicle & mobility testing hub.

Toyota North America is investing more than $50 million to expand its Arizona Proving Grounds into a next-generation vehicle and mobility testing hub. Now branded as the Arizona Mobility Test Center (AMTC at TAPG), the site will feature a new 5.5-mile oval track, an off-road park, and enhanced ride and handling surfaces.

The expansion also paves the way for a future facility dedicated to developing advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The proving grounds have been managed by Interk since 2021 and are open to outside companies for testing, having already hosted nearly 300 vehicles and dozens of industry events.

Here’s why it matters:

Toyota’s investment in U.S.-based testing infrastructure signals a robust commitment to developing next-generation vehicles in North America, which includes models built specifically for U.S. consumers. For dealers, this means faster and more relevant innovation, especially in off-road, handling, and ADAS technologies. In addition, the expansion strengthens Toyota’s manufacturing and R&D presence in the U.S., reinforcing long-term product stability and reducing reliance on overseas testing. As more vehicles are engineered closer to where they’re sold, dealers may see improvements in vehicle performance tailored to local driving needs.

  • New facilities support off-road and highway testing
The additions include a 5.5-mile oval track and an off-road park, enhancing Toyota’s ability to test diverse driving conditions for SUVs and trucks.
  • Focus on future ADAS development
A dedicated facility for advanced driver assistance systems will make Toyota more competitive in semi-autonomous and safety tech.
  • Open access to industry partners
The proving grounds are already hosting third-party testers, which makes the location an ideal hub for automotive collaboration and innovation.
  • Strategic U.S. location benefits regional tuning
Testing in Arizona’s varied terrain allows Toyota to fine-tune its vehicles for real-world conditions that U.S. drivers face, ultimately improving its market fit.
