NADA’s Mike Stanton applauds U.S. decision to block California EV rule

The decision to block California’s electric vehicle mandate marks a major victory for the retail auto industry, consumers, and market-based policymaking. In today’s episode of Inside Automotive, NADA President and CEO Mike Stanton joins us to discuss why this landmark moment is a win for common sense and a necessary course correction that prioritizes practicality over rigid mandates.

"It's a big win for our industry, a big win for consumers, our country, and a huge win for common sense."

With support from lawmakers like Senator Bernie Moreno and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, the White House resolution halts California’s attempt to impose a one-size-fits-all EV requirement. The move opens the door for broader, more flexible solutions that include plug-in hybrids, cleaner-burning combustion engines, and evolving technologies. While EVs remain a critical part of the industry’s future, Stanton emphasizes that consumers, not government mandates, should drive adoption.

Over 100,000 EVs, representing more than $5 billion in inventory, currently sit unsold on dealer lots. A sudden elimination of EV tax credits would severely impact retailers and consumers alike. NADA continues to advocate for a phased rollback that gives dealers time to sell through inventory and allows OEMs to recalibrate pricing strategies. The goal is to avoid a cliff-edge disruption while maintaining momentum toward cleaner transportation.

Attention now turns to the Environmental Protection Agency, where new emissions standards remain a concern. Though less aggressive than California’s, the EPA rules are still viewed as unworkable in their current form. NADA is pressing for revisions and maintains regular communication with the administration, the EPA, and the Department of Transportation to ensure that dealer voices are heard.

Dealers nationwide have already made significant investments in EV infrastructure, including vehicles, charging equipment, and training. While these investments remain valuable, the pressure from overly ambitious rollout plans has tested relationships. OEMs are now working more closely with retailers to strike a better balance between ambition and reality.

Stanton also highlights concerns about proposed tariffs that could affect vehicle affordability and lead to job losses, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses. NADA is engaging with Congress and federal agencies to monitor and respond to any developments that could harm dealers or their customers.

The industry continues to show resilience, with many dealers reporting performance levels still ahead of pre-pandemic benchmarks. While some regions note a modest pullback from the highs of early spring, optimism remains strong. Planning is also underway for the upcoming NADA Show in Las Vegas, which is already drawing high exhibitor interest and registration numbers. Attendance is expected to exceed last year’s totals, reinforcing the industry’s commitment to in-person collaboration and shared progress.
