Inside Hyundai’s $7.6 billion EV power play: A first look at the MetaPlant America Revolution

Bryan County, Georgia, is emerging as a critical hub for the future of U.S. auto manufacturing. Hyundai Motor Group has invested $7.6 billion into its Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, a nearly 3,000-acre facility outside Savannah that signals a major shift in how vehicles are built, powered, and delivered.

This is Hyundai’s first dedicated EV and battery plant in the U.S., with initial capacity of 300,000 vehicles annually and the ability to scale to 500,000. It’s designed for efficiency and resilience, using advanced robotics and real-time production systems to improve quality and flexibility. A key advantage is on-site battery production through a joint venture with LG Energy Solution, reducing supply chain risk and tightening control over one of the most critical EV components.

The economic impact is significant. Hyundai expects to create more than 8,500 direct jobs and nearly 7,000 additional roles tied to suppliers and logistics, further strengthening its U.S. footprint. Since entering the market in 1986, Hyundai has steadily expanded domestic production, with about 80 percent of its U.S. lineup now built in America.

The MetaPlant will eventually support multiple brands, including Kia and Genesis, creating a flexible, multi-brand production hub. Supporting this is the Hyundai Mobility Training Center, where technicians and engineers receive hands-on training in EV systems, diagnostics, and advanced vehicle technologies to meet growing service demands.

The plant is already producing key models like the 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5, offering up to 318 miles of range and access to the Tesla Supercharger network through its NACS port. Joining it is the 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9, a three-row electric SUV with up to 335 miles of range and ultra-fast charging capability from 10 to 80 percent in about 24 minutes.

Looking ahead, Hyundai plans to expand production to include hybrid models and hydrogen fuel cell trucks, reflecting a diversified powertrain strategy. At the same time, the company is investing in autonomy through partnerships with Waymo and Motional, with additional support from Magna International and deployment through Uber.

For dealers, this investment means more stable inventory, faster delivery, and a clearer signal that Hyundai is committed to long-term growth in the U.S. The MetaPlant isn’t just about building EVs, it’s about building a scalable, future-ready manufacturing strategy that aligns with where the industry is heading.
