GM to close Georgia IT Innovation Center, laying off 325 as AI reshapes workforce

The automaker consolidates tech operations, offering transfers, remote roles, or severance amid broader IT restructuring and AI integration.
GM, IT

On the Dash:

  • GM will shutter its Georgia IT Innovation Center by the end of 2025, impacting 325 employees.
  • Some staff members will receive offers for transfers, remote work, or severance, while others will continue working until mid-2026.
  • The closure is part of GM’s broader strategy to consolidate IT operations and align with AI-driven vehicle initiatives.

General Motors is set to close its Georgia IT Innovation Center by the end of 2025, resulting in approximately 325 layoffs, primarily affecting IT staff. The move is part of GM’s ongoing effort to reorganize its technical operations and consolidate innovation centers to improve collaboration and efficiency as artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes the workforce.

Some of the 575 remaining Georgia employees will remain through mid-2026, while others may be offered transfers to other GM tech hubs or remote positions, depending on skill sets. Laid-off employees will receive severance packages in accordance with company policy.

This closure follows the company’s 2023 shutdown of its Chandler, Arizona, IT center, which eliminated 940 positions due to redundancy across GM’s multiple tech facilities. GM also maintains tech centers in Warren, Michigan, and Austin, Texas, reflecting a broader effort to streamline IT operations and optimize technical resources.

Notably, GM has been reducing the ranks of salaried employees across multiple areas. Recently, more than 200 design engineering employees were laid off, and an undisclosed number of staff under GM’s Hydrotec hydrogen fuel cell program were also let go after the program was shuttered.

The Georgia center originally opened in 2013 during a major IT hiring surge, following GM’s 2012 decision to in-source the majority of its IT workforce to reduce costs and invest in innovation. The company expanded its IT staff from 1,400 globally in 2012 to 10,000 by 2015, though current numbers have not been disclosed.

The layoffs reflect industry trends in which AI and automation reduce the need for certain IT functions. The announcement comes shortly after GM’s New York tech showcase, where executives previewed plans for eyes-off autonomous driving and conversational AI powered by Google Gemini, scheduled for rollout in 2028.
