Volkswagen, Rivian software partnership reaches milestone in $5.8B deal

Successful winter testing of the new software platform brings Rivian closer to a $1 billion funding tranche tied to development progress.

Volkswagen, Rivian software partnership reaches milestone

On the Dash:

  • Volkswagen and Rivian complete winter testing milestone tied to a $1 billion funding tranche.
  • Partnership, valued at $5.8 billion through 2027, supports VW’s software and EV strategy.
  • Collaboration targets VW’s core brand, Scout trucks, and Audi as automaker competes with Tesla and BYD.

Volkswagen said Friday it has successfully completed winter testing of vehicles using software developed with Rivian, marking a key milestone in the companies’ partnership and advancing Rivian toward its next funding tranche.

The collaboration, a central part of CEO Oliver Blume’s turnaround strategy, aims to develop a software platform to support a broader model overhaul across Volkswagen’s core brand, its U.S. pickup truck business, Scout, and its premium Audi division.

Volkswagen agreed in November 2024 to invest $5.8 billion in the partnership by 2027, including a $1 billion tranche expected this year upon completion of specific technological milestones. However, the company did not provide additional details on the transaction.

Blume said the automaker is “accelerating towards the future” as it works to strengthen its software capabilities. Notably, the partnership with Rivian follows ongoing challenges at Volkswagen’s in-house software unit, Cariad.

The German automaker is under pressure to close the gap with competitors such as Tesla and China’s BYD, which have gained an advantage in software and data capabilities.
