Chrysler-parent Stellantis is recalling 112,859 U.S. vehicles over potential engine failure that could cause a loss of drive power or engine compartment fire, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported Friday. The recall affects 2023-2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE and 2024-2025 Jeep Wrangler 4XE plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

The issue stems from sand contamination inside engine blocks during the casting process, which may lead to catastrophic engine failure. Affected vehicles were produced from July 19, 2023, through March 3, 2025, for the Grand Cherokee and from June 7, 2023, through March 4, 2025, for the Wrangler. NHTSA said loss of propulsion can increase crash risk, while fires could cause injuries or property damage.

Stellantis is still developing a remedy. Interim letters explaining the safety risk will be mailed to owners starting December 29, 2025. Owners may notice engine knocking or a malfunction indicator lamp prior to engine failure.

The recall follows a series of fire-related recalls for Stellantis Jeep models, including a 375,000-unit recall earlier in November and another October recall involving over 298,000 vehicles for potential rollaway risks. Investigation by Stellantis’ Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance team identified 36 engine fires, 50 loss-of-propulsion incidents, 144 warranty claims, and three injuries potentially linked to the defect.
