The Theory of 5: Chris Saraceno’s guide to winning every day

Black belt-level success in the car business requires more than just sales skills. It requires personal discipline, mentorship and mindset. In this episode of Training Camp, Chris Saraceno, president of Kelly Automotive Group, joins host Adam Marburger to discuss how automotive professionals can elevate their careers through personal growth, intentional mentorship and strong professional values. Saraceno, a high-level dealer and author of The Theory of 5, breaks down why mindset, work ethic and the company you keep are just as important as sales metrics.

Saraceno explains that the automotive industry remains one of the few where individuals with limited formal education can earn six- and even seven-figure incomes, provided they treat the business seriously. He cites examples of people making $250,000 to over $1 million annually in sales roles, emphasizing that consistent effort and integrity are the foundation. To succeed, he advises treating customers like family, staying curious and constantly improving within one’s values.

He shares how pivotal figures in his life—like Harvey Ritter, Robert Plarr, and Mr. Kelly—took the time to guide him early in his career. These mentors helped instill a mindset of prospecting, accountability and thinking beyond perceived limits. Saraceno encourages today’s professionals to seek mentors and co-mentors across areas like business, health and relationships.

Saraceno also introduces the concept ofanti-mentors— figures whose negative behaviors serve as cautionary lessons. He reminds viewers that personal success often requires cutting ties with toxic individuals, even friends or family, who hinder professional or personal growth. He emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with high-performing individuals who elevate standards and behaviors, what he calls aniron sharpens ironmentality.

He also discusses the Theory of 5 Daily—his newest book—which builds on his original philosophy by offering 365 daily reflections and actions tied to personal growth. The book is available at theoryof5.com, with the codeGIFT2025covering the cost, excluding shipping.

"If you hang out with people that want to be great, they have a routine, and they have a focus, it's that iron sharpens iron mindset to say, 'If he could do that or she could do that, I could do that too.' You want to hang out with people that are going to support you in your personal and professional growth." — Chris Saraceno
