Toyota is expanding its presence in San Antonio with a $6.5 million investment in local education, aiming to strengthen STEM learning.

Toyota is expanding its long-standing presence in San Antonio with a $6.5 million investment in local education, aiming to strengthen STEM learning and workforce development.

The grants, distributed over five years through the Toyota USA Foundation’s Driving Possibilities Initiative, will support students and teachers in the East Central Independent School District (East Central ISD) with innovative tools, personal development, and wraparound services to enhance learning readiness.

State leaders recognize the initiative’s role in preparing students for high-demand industries like auto manufacturing, which reinforces Texas’ reputation for a skilled workforce. San Antonio is the ninth location to launch under Driving Possibilities, which focuses on workforce readiness, education, and community engagement nationwide.

The Driving Possibilities initiative in San Antonio is a collaboration between the Toyota USA Foundation, East Central ISD, Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s Institute for School and Community Partnerships, and United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. Select schools in the district will implement STEM-focused programs and experiential learning, while teachers will receive professional development and mentorship.

Toyota Texas continues to expand its footprint in the region following its $531 million rear axle plant announcement in June 2024. The new facility, set to begin operations in 2026, will supply rear axles for Toyota’s Tundra and Sequoia models assembled in San Antonio, as well as the Tacoma produced in Mexico. In addition, the agency Texas views education and workforce development as essential to its long-term success. With its expansion in San Antonio, the company remains committed to investing in the future workforce through initiatives like Driving Possibilities.

Moreover, United Way is launching a Family Resource Center at Pecan Valley STEM Academy to provide essential support services and workforce training for families. The Dual Generation initiative will further assist parents with career development and childcare resources, ensuring students have the foundation to succeed.

Nevertheless, Toyota sees the initiative as a way to expand opportunities and create pathways to high-growth careers. By addressing educational barriers, the company aims to prepare students for the evolving demands of the job market, particularly in STEM-related fields.
