On the Dash:

  • Ford is investing $1 billion to modernize the Kentucky Truck Plant, its key production site for Super Duty trucks and large SUVs.
  • The new paint shop supports the automaker’s high-volume truck and SUV operations and follows roughly $4 billion in recent Kentucky investments.
  • Continued investment in domestic production could strengthen supply and manufacturing capacity for some of Ford’s most important dealer products.

Ford is investing $1 billion to build a new paint shop at the Kentucky Truck Plant, adding to roughly $4 billion in recent investment across the automaker’s Kentucky operations. Although construction is set to begin later this year, the automaker has not set a completion timeline.

The investment supports Ford’s core truck and SUV lineup, which the Kentucky Truck Plant produces the F-250 through F-550 Super Duty models along with the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator, vehicles central to the Ford and Lincoln dealer networks. Modernizing the paint operation should strengthen the plant’s production capabilities for years to come.

The new facility will replace the existing paint shop, one of the most critical and costly operations in any vehicle assembly plant. The upgrade lets the automaker replace aging equipment and manufacturing processes, reinforcing the plant’s role in the company’s broader U.S. manufacturing strategy.

Ford’s commitment reflects confidence in Kentucky’s workforce and in U.S. manufacturing more broadly. For dealers, continued domestic production investment matters for the long-term availability of key truck and SUV products.

Scrutiny of China ties

The announcement follows deep scrutiny of the automaker’s manufacturing strategy. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently criticized the automaker’s U.S. manufacturing practices and its relationships with Chinese companies, but the automaker has characterized the criticism as an attempt to draw attention. The new investment stands as a concrete example of the company’s ongoing capital spending at a major U.S. production facility.

Ford’s emphasis on U.S. manufacturing and its commitment to the Kentucky workforce remain central to its strategy. The investment supports production of some of the company’s most important truck and SUV products and reinforces the infrastructure behind its core lineup.
