83% of American drivers prefer self-charging hybrids over plug-in EVs, survey shows

Despite growing interest in environmental sustainability, EV appeal has slightly weakened.
Jerry's 2024 State of the American Driver Report presents key car ownership findings from a national survey of over 1,200 drivers.

Jerry’s 2024 State of the American Driver Report presents key findings from a national survey of over 1,200 drivers, offering insights on insurance trends, road safety, and auto loan patterns.

One of the report’s key findings is the renewal in car buying intentions, with 42% of respondents indicating plans to purchase a new or used vehicle in the coming year—a substantial increase from the previous year’s 23%. Additionally, 22% expressed willingness to reconsider vehicle acquisition if prices decreased, while 12% cited potential reconsideration in light of lowered interest rates.

Despite growing interest in environmental sustainability, EV appeal has slightly weakened. Only 41% expressed interest in purchasing or leasing an EV, down from 49% the previous year. Moreover, the preference for hybrids over plug-in EVs is evident, with 83% favoring hybrids that do not require plug-in charging.

The automotive retail landscape faces potential disruption in 2024 as Amazon plans to offer vehicle shopping on its platform. A significant 57% of respondents expressed openness to purchasing a car through Amazon—a notable shift from the previous year’s 21% considering an “online platform” for vehicle acquisition.

Insurance affordability emerges as a pressing concern, with 22% of drivers compelled to opt for less coverage than desired due to soaring premiums. Notably, this trend disproportionately affects younger demographics, with 39% of Gen Z and 32% of Millennials making compromises on coverage.

Additionally, financial strain stemming from vehicle ownership prompts lifestyle adjustments for many Americans, with 58% cutting back spending on items such as dining out, clothing, and groceries. This financial strain is particularly acute among younger generations, with 80% of Gen Z and 69% of Millennials tightening their belts.

The influence of corporate leadership and social dynamics on consumer behavior is evident, with 37% of respondents expressing reluctance to purchase a Tesla due to Elon Musk’s political views and management decisions. However, 15% cite these factors as motivating their interest in acquiring a Tesla.

Moreover, perceptions of road safety have deteriorated, with over half of drivers (56%) reporting increased danger on the roads. Aggressive driving behaviors, including angry gestures, aggressive honking, and non-police vehicle altercations, are disturbingly prevalent, underscoring the challenges facing American drivers in navigating today’s roadways.
