Pete Buttigieg warns drivers after a video emerged showing a man driving a Tesla Cybertruck while wearing Apple's Vision Pro headset

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg issued a warning to drivers on February 5 after a video emerged showing a man driving a Tesla Cybertruck while wearing what appeared to be Apple’s recently launched Vision Pro headset. Buttigieg emphasized that drivers must remain alert while driving.

Buttigieg responded on X to the video, which has over 24 million views, of a Tesla driver manipulating a virtual reality field with their hands. The video lasts for approximately ten seconds.

However, Buttigieg’s response reminds the public that all advanced driver assistance systems currently available require the human driver to be in complete control and fully engaged in the driving task at all times.

Apple’s recently launched Vision Pro combines three-dimensional digital material with a view of the outside world. The headset seamlessly blends digital content with the physical space by navigating control via your eyes, hands, and voice. With Vision Pro, individuals will have an infinite canvas that transforms how they interact with the apps they love.

It’s important to note that Apple strongly advises against its headset while operating vehicles.

Furthermore, Buttigieg has previously expressed similar opinions regarding the use of Tesla Autopilot. According to Tesla, the purpose of its sophisticated driving functions is to be utilized by a driver who is entirely focused, “Has their hands on the wheel, and is prepared to take over at any moment.”
