General Motors revealed on August 29 that it’s collaborating with Google to examine ways to apply AI technologies throughout the automakers’ operations.

The Detroit automaker and Google Cloud unit have expanded their earlier collaboration on GM’s OnStar Interactive Virtual Assistant (IVA), which launched in 2022, by forming a broad partnership focused on generative, or conversational, AI.

According to GM, the IVA system is powered by “intent-recognition algorithms” that use conversational AI technology from Google Cloud. It helps OnStar users with routing and navigation by responding to common questions.

The prospective uses of artificial intelligence, particularly the well-known ChatGPT, have become a topic of discussion in the automotive industry, much like in other sectors. Some use cases can include software, in-car assistance like the OnStar service, and vehicle validation.

Mike Abbott, a former Apple executive who is now GM’s executive vice president of software and services, said in a statement that “Generative AI has the potential to revolutionize the buying, owning, and interaction experience inside the vehicle and beyond, enabling more opportunities to deliver new features and services.”

GM previously stated that as part of its more significant partnership with Microsoft, it looked at potential uses for ChatGPT

Earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz also disclosed a collaboration to test ChatGPT artificial intelligence in more than 900,000 vehicles across the United States. According to the German luxury automaker, the “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant will utilize cutting-edge technology to dramatically increase the system’s functionality.
