131,700 Ram pickups to be recalled over engine-related software error

The recall affects certain Ram pickups made in 2021, in which a software issue can cause the vehicle's engine to stall

Stellantis is planning to recall roughly 131,700 Ram pickups, citing a software issue that could cause the engines to stall.

According to the automaker’s case file on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website, the recall affects Ram 1500 pickups built in 2021 with a 5.7L eTorque engine. In the report, the automaker explains that a software error in the powertrain control module could cause incorrect fuel mixture conditions.

The NHTSA notes that the issue can be resolved by updating the calibration software within the unit, a procedure dealers will conduct for free. Owners of the affected Ram pickups will be notified by mail in June, although concerned drivers can also check by inputting the vehicle identification number on the agency’s website.

Stellantis has been forced to act on multiple issues relating to Ram pickups since the start of the year. Its biggest recall so far is one the company made in February over a potential fire hazard, which impacted over 300,000 Ram 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis, 4500 and 5500 Cab Chassis models built between 2021 and 2023. The automaker’s most recent recall affected roughly 69,000 Ram 1500 and 2500 pickups built between 2021 and 2023, and was made in response to a software issue that could prevent the vehicles’ rear-view cameras from sending footage to the front display. A recent study from iSeeCars projected Tesla to have the most recalls over the next 30 years, with all four of the brand’s current models appearing in the top five spots. In 2022, Ford led the nation in recalls for the second consecutive year.
