Tesla set to launch driverless Cybercab, reports say

Employees will ride first before the pedal-free robotaxi joins Tesla’s commercial fleet, according to reports.

Tesla prepares public rollout of driverless Cybercab this month

On the Dash:

  • Tesla employees will ride Cybercabs on Austin public roads before commercial riders do.
  • Cybercab has no steering wheel or pedals, leaving no manual fallback if FSD isn’t ready.
  • Cybercab production is underway in Texas, but its commercial regulatory status remains unclear.

Tesla has told employees to gear up for the Cybercab’s inaugural public rides in Austin, Texas, with a launch that could happen before the end of August. The plans were first reported by The Information, a tech and business news publication.

As reported, the EV maker intends to start the rollout by providing employees with rides in Cybercabs on public roads. A few days afterward, Tesla is anticipated to include these vehicles in its commercial robotaxi service in Austin.

Let’s not forget that the Cybercab is a two-seat vehicle built without a steering wheel or pedals, designed to run entirely on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software with no manual controls as a backup. That design gives Tesla no fallback if the software isn’t ready to operate without human intervention. The EV maker has also said remote operators will monitor the vehicles and can take over in an emergency.

Since June, the EV maker has been preparing the launch, which included public road testing, employee rides on private roads near Tesla’s Austin campus, and training sessions with local first responders on how to handle the vehicles in the field, including moving them if needed. Notably, Tesla’s Austin robotaxi service currently runs on roughly 186 registered Model Y vehicles, and it’s not yet clear whether Cybercabs will replace or supplement that fleet.

Tesla’s own social accounts appear to back up the timeline, as the company’s Robotaxi account on X posted Monday evening that riders who complete trips through Aug. 23 will be entered into a drawing to attend a “Cybercab launch event,” telling followers “more rides = better odds.” The post didn’t include a date, location, or which markets would qualify, and Tesla hasn’t confirmed additional details.

Moreover, the EV maker said on its second-quarter 2026 earnings call that Cybercab production had begun at Gigafactory Texas, with installed annual manufacturing capacity exceeding 125,000 units. Broader production is expected to ramp up later this year. Yet regulatory clarity on commercial Cybercab service remains an open question, since the vehicle’s lack of manual controls puts it outside the design Tesla currently operates commercially.
