Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 takes home three awards at NY Auto Show

This week, various awards were given out at the New York Auto Show, and Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 took home three of the big categories. The judges included over 100 automotive journalists from over 30 countries who took test drives of redesigned and new vehicles and rated them based on various metrics. Competitors included both electric and non-electric vehicles that are available throughout the world and not just in the United States.

The Ioniq 5 garnered “World Car of the Year,” “Electric Vehicle of the Year,” and “World Car Design.” Hyundai’s Executive Vice President, Luc Donckerwolke, also took home a prize, winning the 2022 “World Car Person of the Year” award for designing the vehicle. Other nominated cars in the category included Ford’s new Mustang Mach-E and Kia’s EV6.

This week’s awards are not the first for the Ioniq 5. It was also named the “Top Pick for Family EV” by Cars.com, thanks to its comfortable ride and sufficient space for an entire family.

The complete list of winners demonstrates the auto industry’s push towards electrification, as all of them are electric vehicles. Winners of other categories include the Mercedes-Benz EQS, which won the title of “World Luxury Car,” the Audi e-Tron GT, which won the title of “World Performance Car,” and the Toyota Yaris Cross, which won the title of “World Urban Car.”
