2027 BMW X5 debuts with new design, more powertrains, and the first-ever electric iX5

The BMW X5 has been one of the benchmark luxury midsize SUVs since it debuted in 1999, helping define the premium utility vehicle segment. For 2027, BMW is introducing an all-new fifth-generation X5, bringing significant updates inside and out while expanding the lineup with more electrification than ever before.

During the launch event, I spoke with John Kelly, Head of Product and Technology Communications for BMW of North America, about the company’s latest redesign and what buyers can expect from one of BMW’s most important vehicles.

Unlike the mid-cycle refreshes buyers have seen in recent years, the 2027 X5 is a complete redesign. It adopts BMW’s Neue Klasse design language with a cleaner appearance while remaining unmistakably an X5. Up front, the SUV features a smaller illuminated kidney grille paired with new X-shaped LED headlights. Flusher body surfaces improve aerodynamics, while hidden door handles and available 21- to 23-inch wheels give the vehicle a more contemporary look.

One of the biggest changes for consumers is the expanded choice of powertrains. BMW continues to offer traditional gasoline engines while strengthening its plug-in hybrid offering and introducing the first fully electric X5.

The entry-level X5 40 is powered by BMW’s familiar turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, now producing 394 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. A 48-volt mild hybrid system improves efficiency and throttle response, while acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes approximately five seconds.

For buyers looking to reduce fuel consumption without committing to a fully electric vehicle, the X5 50e plug-in hybrid combines the inline-six engine with an electric motor to deliver a combined 483 horsepower. BMW estimates up to 44 miles of electric-only driving, allowing many commuters to complete their daily trips without using gasoline. The plug-in hybrid reaches 60 mph in approximately 4.6 seconds.

Perhaps the biggest news is the debut of the all-electric iX5. Producing 570 horsepower and 593 lb-ft of torque, the electric SUV is expected to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 4.4 seconds. BMW estimates driving range at approximately 435 miles, placing it among the leaders in the luxury electric SUV segment. Fast charging is another highlight, with BMW estimating the ability to add roughly 170 miles of range in only 10 minutes when connected to a compatible high-speed DC fast charger.

Inside, the X5 receives its most dramatic transformation. The traditional instrument cluster has been replaced by BMW Panoramic Vision, which projects key driving information across the base of the windshield. A new 17.9-inch center touchscreen serves as the primary control interface, complemented by a standard head-up display and BMW’s latest Operating System X.

The system also incorporates an Alexa AI voice assistant while maintaining wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Buyers can also choose an optional passenger display that allows occupants to stream movies, play games, and access entertainment while traveling. BMW says the display automatically dims if it detects the driver looking toward the screen, helping reduce distractions.

Luxury appointments remain a priority throughout the cabin. Heated seats come standard, while available massage seats, a Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system, a panoramic glass roof, and four-zone climate control elevate comfort. Physical buttons have been reduced considerably, giving the interior a cleaner, more minimalist appearance while relying more heavily on digital controls.

Despite the technology upgrades, BMW says the driving experience remains central to the X5’s identity. Every model comes equipped with an adaptive suspension, near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution, improved steering, and the latest Driver Assistance Plus package.

Available Highway Assistant enables hands-free driving on approved highways at speeds up to 85 mph, provided the driver remains attentive. Parking technology has also been enhanced with a 360-degree camera system, automated parking capability, and remote parking functions controlled through a smartphone.

Pricing starts at $69,800 for the rear-wheel-drive X5 40 and $72,100 for the xDrive40 all-wheel-drive model. The X5 50e plug-in hybrid starts at $77,500, while the new all-electric iX5 begins at $79,800. All prices are before the $1,450 destination charge.

An important point for American buyers is that the new X5 continues to be built at BMW’s manufacturing facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina, which has become the company’s largest production plant worldwide and supplies markets across the globe.

The 2027 BMW X5 enters one of the industry’s most competitive segments, facing established rivals including the Mercedes-Benz GLE, Genesis GV80, Porsche Cayenne, Lexus RX, Acura MDX, Volvo XC90, Audi Q7, and the all-electric Rivian R1S. With gasoline, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric models all sharing the same platform, BMW is giving buyers flexibility without requiring them to compromise on luxury or performance.

The redesigned X5 represents one of BMW’s most significant product launches in recent years. It preserves the performance and driving dynamics that have defined the X5 for more than two decades while introducing new technology, expanded electrification, and a thoroughly modern interior. The remaining question is how well these new systems perform in everyday driving, something buyers will soon be able to evaluate once the new X5 reaches dealerships.
