Under the hood, buyers can choose from three engines. A 5.3-liter V8 comes standard, while a more powerful 6.2-liter V8 is available for those wanting additional performance. My test vehicle featured the optional 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel, a $995 upgrade that delivers 305 horsepower and an impressive 495 lb-ft of torque. That abundant low-end torque is immediately noticeable, making acceleration effortless despite the Suburban’s substantial size.
All three engines are paired with a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission and are available with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. While the diesel won’t win any drag races, reaching 60 mph in about 8.4 seconds, it shines where full-size SUV buyers spend most of their time, delivering confident highway passing power, relaxed cruising, and excellent fuel economy. EPA estimates come in at 24 mpg combined, while highway range stretches to an impressive 624 miles between fill-ups. That means fewer fuel stops on long family vacations or when towing.
Speaking of towing, the diesel-powered Suburban is rated to tow up to 7,800 pounds. Buyers looking for additional capability can add the Max Trailering Package for $540, making this SUV a capable choice for boats, campers, or utility trailers.
Despite its size, the Suburban feels surprisingly composed on the road. Even without the available Magnetic Ride Control, the suspension delivers a smooth, comfortable ride over rough pavement. The turning radius is better than expected, making parking and maneuvering easier than many competitors. Buyers wanting an even more refined driving experience can opt for adaptive dampers and an adjustable air suspension that further improves ride quality and helps with loading cargo.
Inside, the Suburban continues to excel with one of the roomiest cabins in the segment. Standard seating accommodates up to nine passengers, while second-row captain’s chairs reduce capacity to seven but provide easier access to the spacious third row. Unlike many large SUVs, adults can comfortably ride in all three rows, making the Suburban a true people mover.
The interior of the RST trim offers leather seating surfaces for the first and second rows, heated front seats with memory settings, a heated steering wheel, and easy-fold second- and third-row seats that simplify switching between passengers and cargo. My test vehicle also featured the panoramic sunroof, a $1,500 option that brightens the cabin and gives passengers an even greater sense of openness.
Technology has received a significant upgrade as well. A large 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen dominates the dashboard alongside an 11-inch digital instrument cluster. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with a Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless smartphone charging. Buyers looking for premium audio can add the Comfort Package, which includes a Bose 10-speaker sound system, while families will appreciate the available rear-seat entertainment system on long road trips.
Safety remains one of the Suburban’s strongest attributes. The SUV earns a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and comes standard with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Chevrolet also offers its excellent Super Cruise hands-free driving system for $2,855, making long highway trips less fatiguing while maintaining driver attention.
From a design standpoint, the RST trim stands apart with blacked-out exterior accents and distinctive 22-inch wheels that give the massive SUV a sportier personality. My test vehicle wore Radiant Red Tintcoat paint, a $495 option that highlighted the Suburban’s bold styling. Built on the same proven platform as the Chevrolet Tahoe and Silverado 1500 pickup, the Suburban benefits from engineering that has demonstrated durability and capability over many years.
Cargo capacity continues to be one of the Suburban’s biggest advantages. The low, flat load floor makes loading heavy items easier than in several competitors, and cargo space expands from 42 cubic feet behind the third row to an enormous 145 cubic feet with both rear rows folded flat. Whether transporting luggage, sports equipment, or building supplies, few SUVs offer this level of versatility.
Pricing starts at $66,495 and climbs to $89,495 depending on trim level. My well-equipped RST Diesel test vehicle, including options, came to $83,950. Chevrolet backs the Suburban with a three-year or 36,000-mile limited warranty, a five-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty, and complimentary maintenance for the first service visit.
There are only a couple of minor complaints. The absence of a traditional 12-volt power outlet may disappoint some buyers who still rely on accessories requiring one, and the engine stop-start system requires manually pressing a button to disable it each time the vehicle is started rather than remembering the driver’s preference.
The 2026 Chevrolet Suburban RST Diesel competes against the Ford Expedition and Expedition Max, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, Nissan Armada, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, and even Chevrolet’s own Tahoe. While each offers its own strengths, the diesel-powered Suburban stands out by combining exceptional passenger space, impressive towing capability, outstanding highway range, and surprisingly good fuel economy in one package.
