GM to suspend Factory Zero shifts, 360 workers temporarily laid off

The suspension will begin on Sept. 2 and resume on Oct. 6.
GM will temporarily lay off 360 workers as it suspends Factory Zero shifts starting Sept. 2, citing weaker U.S. EV demand.

On the Dash:

  • General Motors will temporarily lay off 360 employees as it suspends the first- and second-shift production at its Factory Zero beginning Sept. 2
  • The suspension impacts the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ.
  • GM says the move is intended to align production with current U.S. EV demand.

General Motors (GM) is temporarily laying off 360 employees at its flagship electric vehicle plant, Factory Zero, in order to realign production output to stalling U.S. EV demand.

In a memo to employees, obtained by and first reported by the Detroit Free Press, GM confirmed that it will partially suspend production on first- and second-shifts. The suspension will begin on Sept. 2 and resume on Oct. 6. Additionally, approximately 360 employees in second-shift production will be temporarily laid off until Oct. 6. Of the affected employees, 200 who were on temporary layoff this week and scheduled to return on Sept. 2 will now have their return extended.

“Factory Zero is making temporary adjustments to production to align to market dynamics,GM spokesperson Kevin Kelly told the Detroit Free Press. Impacted employees will be eligible to receive subpay and benefits under the GM-UAW contract during the layoff period.

The memo confirmed that production of the GMC Hummer EV and the Cadillac Escalade IQ will be impacted. The suspension will not affect the output of the Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV pickups.

GM’s Factory Zero has experienced several temporary layoffs this year. In a similar situation in April, the automaker temporarily laid off 200 workers to slow production. This latest move attempts to further align production output with dwindling consumer demand in the United States.
