GM deploys mobile EV charging units to aid LA Wildfire recovery

GM’s multi-faceted response underscores its commitment to supporting its customers and communities in times of crisis.

General Motors (GM) has announced a comprehensive support initiative to aid employees, customers, and communities impacted by the devastating Los Angeles wildfires. The automaker is rolling out several measures, including mobile charging stations, financial assistance, and philanthropic contributions, to help those affected recover and rebuild.

Mobile EV Charging Solutions Deployed

Starting February 1 and running through April, GM will deploy mobile EV charging solutions across the Los Angeles metro area to support those who lost their homes and access to charging infrastructure. The initiative includes:

  • HYDROTEC Mobile Charging Units: Three renewable hydrogen-powered chargers, each capable of DC fast charging two EVs simultaneously.
  • Yoshi Mobility Trailers: Three liquid propane-powered chargers developed by Nashville-based Yoshi Mobility, partially funded by GM Ventures.
  • InCharge Energy Station: A mobile station with five DC fast chargers, powered by a battery energy storage system and biodiesel generator.

Additional Recovery Efforts

GM’s wildfire response extends beyond EV charging to include the following initiatives:

  • Philanthropic Contributions: Donations to nonprofits addressing immediate and long-term community needs, particularly in local education systems.
  • Employee Giving Campaigns: Fundraising efforts to support the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region and the California Fire Foundation.
  • OnStar Crisis Assist Services: Free services for customers with OnStar-equipped vehicles, including routing guidance, emergency assistance, and fire-related updates.
  • Customer Vehicle Assistance: Support for customers with damaged or destroyed GM vehicles, including:
    • Assistance with purchasing or leasing a new GM vehicle.
    • Payment deferrals for impacted customers.
    • Coverage of collision repair deductible costs for wildfire-related damage.
    • Expedited parts shipments to affected regions.
