Ford reports 10.2% July sales decline as retail strategy shifts

The Detroit automaker points to discontinued models and reduced fleet sales as key reasons for a 10,2% drop in U.S. deliveries.

Ford reports 10.2% July sales decline as retail strategy shifts

On the Dash:

  • Ford is prioritizing higher-margin retail sales over fleet volume, even if it results in lower overall sales.
  • F-Series inventory should continue to improve as production recovers from last year’s supplier disruptions.
  • Affordability concerns remain a headwind across the industry, with analysts expecting lower U.S. sales this year.

Ford reportedly sold 169,951 vehicles in the U.S. in July, which is down 10.2% from a year prior. The Detroit automaker stated that this decrease is a result of intentional business decisions rather than a drop in retail demand.

Ford reduced sales of low-margin daily rental fleet vehicles and discontinued the Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair in preparation for upcoming product launches. As a result, daily rental fleet sales fell 95% year over year as the automaker shifted its focus to higher-margin retail customers.

Excluding discontinued models and fleet reductions, the automaker reported that sales in July would have declined by less than 1%, outperforming an estimated 2% industry-wide decline for the same month. The company stated that this strategy creates capacity for an expanded lineup of new vehicles planned through the end of the decade.

By the numbers

Demand for F-Series trucks remained strong as production continued to recover from last year’s supplier-related aluminum disruptions.

Additionally, Ford’s electrified vehicle sales fell sharply in July; however, hybrid sales were down 25.1% and EV sales were down 74.9% compared to a year earlier. However, base trim models fared better, with Maverick XL sales up 7.9% and Ranger XL sales up 21% year to date, according to Ford’s official release.

Notably, the automaker has prioritized retail deliveries of its most profitable trucks and SUVs. Although the automaker’s U.S. sales are down 9.7% year to date, the company says higher vehicle prices and broader affordability pressures continue to impact industry demand.

On the other hand, analysts expect U.S. new vehicle sales to soften in 2026, despite steady consumer interest in trucks and hybrids.
