Fire breaks out at Fuyao plant supplying major automakers

  • A fire at the Fuyao plant serving major automakers highlights ongoing supply chain vulnerability risks.
  • No injuries reported, and GM and Stellantis say operations remain unaffected.
  • The facility employs more than 3,000 workers and plays a key role in the U.S. glass supply.

A fire at a major automotive glass plant near Dayton, Ohio, is under investigation after flames damaged part of the facility late Sunday, though no injuries were reported and automakers said operations remain unaffected.

The blaze began around 8:30 p.m. Sunday on the roof of the Fuyao Glass America plant in Moraine, Ohio, according to city officials. The fire was brought under control by Tuesday evening. Officials confirmed no factory employees or firefighters were injured.

The facility, considered one of the largest automotive glass manufacturing plants in the world, supplies windshields, windows, and related components to major automakers, including General Motors, Ford, BMW, Honda, and others.

Fuyao Glass America employs more than 3,000 workers and was established after the Chinese company took over a former GM plant a decade ago. The facility gained national attention as the subject of the Oscar-winning Netflix documentary “American Factory.”

The company has faced scrutiny in recent years as federal authorities raided the plant in 2024 over allegations involving undocumented workers, though no criminal charges have been filed. Fuyao has denied wrongdoing and said its employees are authorized to work in the United States.

The incident comes as automakers continue to navigate supply chain risks. Last year, Ford reported a $2 billion impact after fires at a Novelis-owned aluminum plant in New York caused prolonged disruptions.
