Dave Anderson, leadership expert and author of Elevate Your Excellence, discusses the second component of strategic planning: strategy. On today’s episode of Lessons and Leadership, Anderson encourages dealers to focus on selecting high-leverage strategies, or “centers of gravity,” that accelerate progress toward critical goals while maintaining flexibility.
Anderson builds on the concept of vision and narrowing focus to a few ultimate goals, emphasizing that strategy is about identifying the most impactful actions to reach those goals. He uses examples from the Air Force Academy and martial arts to illustrate that success comes from targeting the most important areas rather than pursuing everything equally.
Additionally, he cautions that many organizations approach strategy incorrectly by asking, “What are all the things we can do to reach our goals?” Instead, he advises that leaders should ask, “What are the fewest battles necessary to win the war?” By doing so, it narrows the focus to high-leverage strategies that accelerate results and prevent wasted effort.
“Be willing to adapt as things change around you.”
Ultimately, Anderson emphasized that strategic planning should be both simple and flexible. He advises leaders to avoid becoming overly committed to a single plan, stressing the need to adjust strategies as circumstances evolve. His core advice was, “Keep your strategy simple, adaptable, and focused on what truly matters.”
Tactics, Anderson explained, are the next step in implementing a strategic plan. When paired with a clear, focused strategy, tactics allow organizations to execute effectively and reach their goals more efficiently.
For leaders seeking further guidance, Anderson recommends his book, Elevate Your Excellence, and the full Lessons and Leadership series.
