News this week that BYD is eyeing acquisitions of struggling European luxury brands including Maserati while simultaneously pursuing talks with Stellantis and other legacy automakers to acquire idle or spare manufacturing capacity — a two-pronged strategy to deepen its European roots and bypass EU tariffs. Brands such as Stellantis subsidiary Maserati are “very interesting,” BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li told Bloomberg May 13. It has yet to take any action, she added.
