BMW’s new i3 brings 3 Series design to all-electric sedan lineup

The upcoming BMW i3 combines next-generation EV technology with 3 Series design, featuring dual motors, faster charging, and a Fall 2026 release.

BMW is preparing to launch the all-electric i3 sedan, a new entry in its next-generation EV lineup that blends the performance identity of the 3 Series with updated battery, software, and charging technology. The i3 is expected to hit the market in Fall 2026.

The i3 follows the BMW iX3 compact SUV as the second model built on the company’s next-generation electric vehicle platform. BMW says the sedan combines the proportions and driving spirit of the 3 Series with advanced EV technology, including dual electric motors and all-wheel drive, delivering 463 horsepower and 476 pounds-feet of torque.

BMW estimates a driving range of up to 440 miles, and the i3 features 800-volt architecture that supports 400-kilowatt charging, 30% faster than current BMW EV models. A North American Charging Standard port with CCS adapter allows use at Supercharger stations and other charging networks. The vehicle also supports bidirectional vehicle-to-load, vehicle-to-home, and vehicle-to-grid charging functions.

The i3 showcases BMW’s Neue Klasse design language, featuring a long wheelbase, short overhangs, flared fenders, and proportions reminiscent of the 3 Series. Optional features include an Iconic Glow lighting package and flush-mounted, automatically extending door handles.

Inside, the i3 integrates four dedicated computers that manage driving dynamics, infotainment, automated systems, and vehicle access. The “Heart of Joy” driving computer coordinates braking, steering, and regenerative functions, allowing drivers to interact seamlessly with optional Level 2+ driver-assistance systems. A Panoramic Vision display stretches across the windshield and can be customized via a 17.9-inch touchscreen, complemented by a 3D head-up display.

BMW’s Operating System X enables over-the-air updates, while My Modes allow users to personalize lighting, sound, drive modes, and display layouts. The i3 also includes Digital Key Plus for smartphone and smartwatch access, as well as the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, powered by Amazon Alexa+ with generative AI.

Production of the i3 will begin in August 2026 at BMW’s Munich plant, with deliveries starting this fall. Pricing has not been announced, though analysts expect it to align with current 3 Series models and the all-electric i4 Gran Coupe.

The i3 and iX3 signal BMW’s next step in electrification, pairing high-tech systems with the brand’s trademark driving engagement and compact sports sedan proportions.
