BMW is set to open U.S. reservations for the new i3 electric sedan on Sept. 29, a week earlier than planned, according to a BMWBlog post. Per the report, BMW emailed customers who signed up for updates on Wednesday and told them to get ready.
Company sources had earlier told the outlet that orders would open in early October.
Although buyers can customize the vehicle in an online configurator with a deposit, as with the new iX3, the deposit will likely be around $1,000.
BMW’s U.S. website says the sedan will be available starting in 2027 and will initially come in one configuration: the all-wheel-drive i3 50 xDrive. The dual-motor setup delivers a combined 463 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque.
The sedan features an 800-volt architecture supporting 400-kilowatt DC fast charging. It includes a built-in North American Charging Standard (NACS) port for Tesla Supercharger access. The interior showcases the automaker’s Neue Klasse design, equipped with a 17.9-inch touchscreen and BMW Panoramic Vision. An optional 3D Head-Up Display is also available.
However, the German automaker has yet to announce pricing, which Electrek expects shortly after reservations open. The i3 should start at about $55,000 to $60,000, given the iX3 SUV’s $61,500 base price.
Rivals include the Tesla Model 3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA EV, priced starting at $38,630 and $47,250. The iX3 already has high demand, with over 100,000 orders in Europe alone. Due to this strong initial interest, BMW began accepting i3 orders in Europe early, and the U.S. release is upcoming, according to Electrek.
