Hyundai Motor and its union reached a tentative wage agreement Tuesday, following the union’s first full strike in a decade on August 21. Since July, workers have conducted a series of partial stoppages regarding wages, bonuses, retirement age, and job protections. Union members are scheduled to vote on an agreement on August 31.
Under the agreement, Hyundai will raise base salaries by 4.1% and pay workers a performance bonus equivalent to 400% of their base pay, along with additional cash and bonus payments. The company will also hire 500 new technical workers between 2027 and 2028.
Additionally, the agreement addresses retirement age and job security tied to artificial intelligence (AI). If lawmakers amend the relevant legislation, the retirement age will rise from 60 to 65. Therefore, Hyundai and the union have also agreed to discuss employment concerns as the company rolls out new business models, addressing worries about job losses linked to AI and automation.
The automaker also plans to deploy humanoid robots at its Georgia plant starting in 2028 and owns Boston Dynamics, the maker of the humanoid Atlas robot. According to industry estimates, the labor dispute cost Hyundai more than 2 trillion won, or roughly $1.4 billion, in lost sales. The ratification of the agreement would then end months of production disruptions at Hyundai’s South Korean operations.
For dealers, reduced production interruptions could lead to greater predictability in vehicle availability and inventory. The long-term impact will depend on how Hyundai balances workforce growth with its planned automation expansion.
