Tesla, Toyota recall more than 528,000 U.S. vehicles over safety issues

Tesla is recalling more than 20,000 vehicles over excessively bright headlights, while Toyota is recalling more than 508,000 Camry Hybrids over instrument cluster failures.

Tesla, Toyota recall more than 528,000 U.S. vehicles over safety issues

On the Dash:

  • Tesla is recalling 20,349 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles and has not yet finalized a fix.
  • Toyota is also recalling 508,354 Camry Hybrids and will provide a free software update for the instrument cluster.
  • These recalls give service departments a chance to connect with customers and perform repairs, with Toyota’s remedy already in place.

The National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) disclosed two separate vehicle recalls Tuesday affecting a combined total of more than 528,000 vehicles, one from Tesla over headlights and one from Toyota over instrument clusters.

Tesla is recalling 20,349 vehicles in the U.S. because their low-beam headlights may shine too brightly. According to NHTSA, the excessive brightness could reduce visibility for oncoming drivers and raise the risk of crashes. Although the recall covers certain Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, the EV maker has yet to finalize a remedy.

The headlight recall follows a broader pattern of regulatory scrutiny for Tesla. In July, NHTSA opened a preliminary investigation into approximately 1.2 million Tesla vehicles over reported suspension failures that could lead to a loss of steering control.

Separately, Toyota is recalling 508,354 vehicles in the U.S. due to a problem with the instrument cluster display. The recall covers certain 2025-2026 Camry Hybrid vehicles. According to NHTSA, a display failure during startup could deactivate the hazard lights, turn signals, seat belt warnings and smart key reminder, which increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Toyota dealers will update the instrument cluster display software at no charge, giving them a direct opportunity to service affected customers. Moreover, dealers should prepare to explain the safety implications to customers and complete the software update for every vehicle involved.
