  • GM allocates $830M to Michigan and Ohio plants to boost gas-powered truck and SUV production
  • Total U.S. manufacturing investment surpasses $6B over the past year
  • Funding targets transmission and engine output across three key facilities

General Motors on Wednesday announced an $830 million investment in three U.S. plants to expand production of next-generation gas-powered trucks and SUVs, reinforcing its manufacturing footprint in the Midwest.

The latest funding brings GM’s total U.S. investment in onshoring and manufacturing to more than $6 billion over the past year. The automaker will direct the new capital to facilities in Romulus, Saginaw, and Toledo.

“This $830 million investment is another clear signal of our commitment to these facilities, the exceptional people who work here and the customers who depend on the products we build every day,” Mike Trevorrow, GM’s Global Manufacturing Senior Vice President, said in the company’s press release.

GM will invest $300 million in its Romulus Propulsion Systems plant to increase production of 10-speed transmissions used in full-size trucks and SUVs. The automaker committed an additional $300 million to the facility late last year, bringing total Romulus investment for this program to $600 million.

At Saginaw Metal Casting Operations, GM will spend $150 million to expand head casting capacity for sixth-generation engines used in full-size pickups and the Chevrolet Corvette. The Toledo Propulsion Systems plant will receive $80 million to support additional transmission output for light-duty trucks.

Approximately 3,000 employees work across the three facilities receiving the investment.
