General Motors expands its electric vision through GM Energy

GM Energy is shaping a future where EVs do more than drive.
GM is redefining the role of EVs, turning them into more than just a mode of transportation through its GM Energy initiative.

General Motors (GM) is redefining the role of electric vehicles, turning them into more than just a mode of transportation. Through GM Energy, the company is integrating public charging, home charging, and energy management to make EVs a key power source for homes and communities.

GM Energy is actively building a nationwide charging network to ensure that EV drivers have easy access. Currently, GM customers can use more than 231,000 public charging ports, including roughly 50,000 DC fast chargers across the U.S., and additional ports are being added.

Key initiatives include:

  • EVgo Partnership: Over 2,000 fast-charging stalls planned in high-traffic locations.
  • ChargePoint Collaboration: Up to 500 new fast-charging stalls, with the first already operational.
  • Pilot Flying J Integration: Fast-charger lanes at travel centers for convenient recharging on long trips.
  • IONNA Joint Venture: One of eight founding automakers working to develop premium charging rest stops.
  • Tesla Supercharger Access: With a NACS charging adapter, GM EVs can now use 20,000 Tesla Superchargers in the U.S. and Canada.

EV drivers can easily locate and pay for charging via GM’s built-in navigation system or the GM mobile brand app.

For most drivers, home charging meets 80% of their daily driving needs. GM Energy offers advisors to help new EV owners install the right home charging system. Vehicles like the 2025 GMC Sierra EV Denali can provide a GM-estimated 460-mile range, making home charging a reliable solution for everyday travel.

Beyond transportation, GM EVs are being positioned as energy storage solutions. With bidirectional charging, an EV’s battery can power a home during blackouts using the PowerShift charger and V2H Enablement Kit. GM Energy’s PowerBank system allows homeowners to store energy for up to 20 hours—and even integrate solar power for greater energy independence.

The Future: EVs as Virtual Power Plants

Moreover, GM Energy is working with major U.S. utilities to develop vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, enabling EVs to send power back to the grid. This advancement could transform EVs into energy assets, stabilizing infrastructure and creating new opportunities for owners.

By expanding charging networks, enabling home energy resilience, and innovating grid integration, GM Energy is shaping a future where EVs do more than drive—they power entire lifestyles.
