2024 Rivian R1T becomes the only electric pickup to earn Top Safety Pick+ award

This recognition reflects the growing trend of electric vehicles not only competing with but surpassing traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
The 2024 Rivian R1T cemented its position as a leader in safety, being the only fully electric pickup truck to win the Top Safety Pick+ award

The 2024 Rivian R1T has cemented its position as a leader in automotive safety, becoming the only fully electric pickup truck to receive the prestigious Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This award recognizes the R1T as one of the safest vehicles on the road, and no other pickup—electric or internal combustion—made the 2024 top safety list. This accolade highlights Rivian’s commitment to safety and innovation, as the R1T stands among just 31 vehicles across all categories to receive the coveted award.

Rivian, an American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has been rapidly gaining momentum, driven by the success of its two flagship models: the R1T pickup and the R1S SUV. Both vehicles have garnered attention for their blend of performance, cutting-edge technology, and distinctive design. With the recent release of the second-generation 2025 models, Rivian continues to evolve its product offerings through continuous over-the-air (OTA) updates that improve software and safety features. This approach keeps its vehicles competitive while reducing the need for frequent hardware overhauls.

The Rivian R1T’s Top Safety Pick+ distinction marks the third consecutive year it has earned this award, having first been awarded the recognition in 2022. To achieve this prestigious designation, the R1T had to meet or exceed several rigorous safety benchmarks set by the IIHS. These include “Good” ratings in crashworthiness tests such as the small overlap front and side crash tests, as well as “Acceptable” or “Good” ratings for headlights and pedestrian crash prevention technology. The R1T excelled in all categories, except for its pedestrian front crash prevention system, which received an “Acceptable” rating—still meeting the IIHS standard for Top Safety Pick+.

The recognition of the R1T by IIHS underscores the broader shift in the automotive industry toward safer, more sustainable vehicles. Historically, pickups have been known for their durability and utility, but many have lagged behind in safety and environmental standards. Rivian’s ability to combine these traditionally desirable traits with advanced safety and electric powertrain technology sets it apart. The R1T, with its rugged off-road capability, 300+ mile electric range, and robust safety features, positions itself as a future-proof solution for pickup buyers who no longer have to choose between power and protection.

Starting at around $70,000, the 2024 and 2025 Rivian R1T models are available for purchase or lease. With its unique design, advanced capabilities, and now its unrivaled safety status in the pickup category, the R1T further solidifies Rivian’s position as a major player in the electric vehicle market.

This recognition reflects the growing trend of electric vehicles not only competing with but surpassing traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in areas like safety, efficiency, and innovation.
