Shawn Fain, President of the United Auto Workers (UAW), will now oversee the union’s Stellantis Department, as confirmed by sources familiar with the matter. This change involves reassigning these responsibilities from Vice President Rich Boyer, who will continue overseeing the union’s Competitive Shop/Independents, Parts, and Suppliers departments.

The decision to transfer the Stellantis Department to the president’s office was made without the involvement of the International Executive Board, the union’s top leadership body, which caused some members to be frustrated.

This realignment marks the second most recent leadership shift on the International Executive Board, following reassignments in February involving Secretary-Treasurer Margaret Mock’s departments. Fain communicated these changes to staff, characterizing them as reorganizing departments and assignments within the union.

Notably, Fain, Boyer, and Mock were part of the same reform slate during the UAW’s inaugural direct election last year, signaling a more activist approach to organizing and bargaining. This election followed an agreement with the federal government after a corruption scandal involving several former UAW officials and auto executives, leading to significant reforms within the union’s leadership structure.

While specific details regarding the Stellantis Department’s transfer and its implications remain undisclosed, this development underscores ongoing changes within the UAW’s leadership and organizational structure.
