General Motors considers adding midsize electric pickup to Hummer line

General Motors Hummer

According to sources familiar with the matter, General Motors might consider adding an electric midsize pickup truck to its Hummer lineup, Bloomberg reports.

The sources, who spoke anonymously, said GM already has a design concept for a smaller, electric Hummer at its California studio, and there is a good chance of going into production.

GM Hummer EV

GM already produces an electric Hummer pickup, and a full-size SUV is expected next year. However, the sources say a midsized offering could meet the demand for lower-emission vehicles. They also noted that the Hummer brand’s popularity, familiarity, and strong following make building a smaller, still brawny version a logical extension.

General Motors plans to spend $35 billion to build 30 electric vehicles by 2025, and the Hummer is a vital part of the strategy. It appeals to high-end customers and offers lower-priced versions to support its fleet business.

The electric version of the Hummer entered production in late 2021 and has been a hit with buyers. With a price tag starting at $110,000, GM has already accepted over 90,000 reservations for the military-styled pickup. Demand was so high that the company had to temporarily halt sales and even raise the price to avoid a large backlog of orders.
