Tesla slashes Cybertruck prices amid production slowdowns

According to the company's website, discounts on Cybertrucks vary by model and configuration,.
Tesla has introduced discounts on its Cybertruck inventory, marking down prices by up to $1,600 on new units and $2,600 on demo models

Tesla has introduced discounts on its Cybertruck inventory, marking down prices by up to $1,600 on new units and as much as $2,600 on demo models. The move comes as production at Tesla’s Austin, Texas, factory reportedly slowed, raising questions about the trajectory of the highly anticipated electric pickup.

According to the company’s website, discounts on Cybertrucks vary by model and configuration, with demo vehicles offering the highest markdowns. However, the production of the Cybertruck has faced delays, leading to a range of challenges since its delivery debut in 2023.

Unveiled by CEO Elon Musk in 2019, the Cybertruck originally promised a $40,000 starting price. By 2024, its base price nearly doubled to $80,000, tempering expectations for affordability. Despite initial fanfare, the Cybertruck’s rollout has been plagued by production hiccups, multiple recalls, and pricing concerns.

In 2024, the Cybertruck became the fifth best-selling EV in the U.S., outselling the Ford Lightning F-150 with 38,965 units sold. However, that year, Tesla issued six recalls, including one in November, to address defective drive inverters.

It is important to note that while U.S. EV sales grew 7.3% in 2024, reaching 1.3 million units, Tesla’s overall deliveries dropped by 37,000 vehicles year-over-year. Additionally, increased competition from rival automakers has eroded Tesla’s market share.

Wildfire relief efforts

While Elon Musk recently apologized for delivery delays in California, he citied the need to repurpose Cybertrucks for wildfire recovery in Los Angeles. The vehicles are used as mobile power stations to provide Starlink internet in affected areas.

“Apologies to those expecting Cybertruck deliveries in California over the next few days,” Musk posted on X. “We need to use those trucks as mobile base stations to provide power to Starlink Internet terminals in areas of LA without connectivity. A new truck will be delivered at the end of the week.”
