  • General Motors plans to launch eyes-off autonomous driving by 2028, starting with the all-electric Cadillac ESCALADE IQ.
  • GM will introduce conversational AI with Google Gemini in 2026, eventually moving to its own custom AI platform.
  • Vehicles will gain a new centralized computing platform, improving system integration, over-the-air updates, and long-term vehicle enhancements.

General Motors (GM) will release a suite of advanced technologies in its vehicles, including an eyes-off driver-assistance system, in-vehicle artificial intelligence, and more, by 2028. At the GM Forward event in New York on Wednesday, CEO Mary Barra and other executives showcased the initiatives, detailing how they will “transform the car from a mode of transportation into an intelligence assistant.”

General Motors will debut eyes-off autonomous driving by 2028. The first nameplate to feature the technology will be the all-electric Cadillac ESCALADE IQ SUV. Through its SuperCruise platform, GM has already mapped over 600,000 miles of hands-free roads and customers have driven over 700,000 hands-free miles in North America.

GM will also introduce conversational AI with Google Gemini beginning in 2026, which allows vehicle owners to communicate naturally with their vehicles, transforming the car into an intelligent assistant. Eventually, GM will develop and introduce its own custom-built AI platform.

The company will also introduce significantly upgraded computing power through a new, centralized computing platform. This enhanced platform will integrate the vehicle’s major systems — propulsion, steering, and infotainment — onto a single computing core. The powerful computer increases over-the-air update capacity and expands the company’s capabilities to enhance vehicles long after they’ve rolled off the dealership lot.
