BYD reports July sales decline amid escalating EV price war

BYD’s deliveries dropped for the first time in July as Chinese EV price wars intensify.
China’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer, BYD, reported a sharp drop in monthly sales for the first time in 2025.

BYD CEO | Wang Chuanfu

China’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer, BYD, reported a sharp drop in monthly sales for the first time in 2025, delivering 341,030 vehicles in July, down from 377,628 in June. The decline follows a wave of aggressive price cuts in the Chinese EV market that BYD helped ignite in May.

Competitors Li Auto and Nio also reported declines, shipping 30,731 and 21,017 units, respectively, in July, while Xpeng and Xiaomi recorded gains with 36,717 and over 30,000 units. The turbulence reflects intensifying competition and has drawn attention from policymakers.

Here’s why it matters:

For U.S. dealers and automotive retailers, the growing instability in China’s EV market reflects broader global trends that could affect inventory sourcing, pricing strategies, and consumer expectations. With Chinese automakers like BYD and Leapmotor increasingly eyeing international expansion and partnership (e.g., Stellantis backing Leapmotor), dealers must stay alert to future competition and technological innovation coming from these brands. The volume shifts and aggressive pricing also suggest how EV makers may seek overseas markets to offset domestic pressure.

Key takeaways:

  • BYD’s first decline of 2025
The automaker shipped 341,030 vehicles in July 2025, down from 377,628 in June, ending a streak of monthly gains.
  • Price war drives turbulence
BYD’s steep discounts in May sparked an industry-wide price battle, forcing competitors to match price cuts and eroding margins.
  • Li Auto and Nio slump
Li Auto reported a 39.7% year-over-year decline, while Nio dropped 2.7%, with both companies launching new SUV models to reenergize demand.
  • Winners emerge amid shakeup
Xiaomi delivered over 30,000 vehicles, and Xpeng hit a record 36,717 units in July 2025, marking its ninth straight month above 30,000.
  • Huawei-backed alliance surges
The Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance, including Aito, delivered 47,752 EVs, boosted by strong sales of the Wenjie series.
