BMW is preparing to enter the off-road SUV market with a new model designed to compete with the Mercedes-Benz G-class, according to Automotive News. Production of the SUV, reportedly code-named G74, is expected to begin in the second half of 2029 at BMW’s South Carolina factory. The vehicle will be built on a modified version of the BMW X5 platform.

The G74 will likely serve as an off-road-focused successor to the BMW XM, the M performance flagship SUV known for its powerful, sporty driving. The XM is expected to be discontinued in 2028, making room for the new G74 on the assembly line. The G74 is anticipated to feature a more rugged, boxy design, advanced all-terrain capabilities, and potentially a hybrid powertrain. However, it is expected to primarily rely on an internal combustion engine.

BMW has already begun exploring off-road enhancements with the X5 Silver Anniversary Edition, which includes the xOffroad package featuring a rear locking differential, off-road drive modes, underbody protection, and all-terrain tires. The G74 is expected to build on these upgrades to create a fully capable all-terrain SUV.

While the next-generation BMW X5 is being developed with both gas and electric options, market trends suggest that the electric version of the Mercedes G-class is selling more slowly than its gas counterpart, averaging 41 days to sell versus 16 days for the traditional model. This may influence BMW’s decision to prioritize combustion or hybrid powertrains for the G74.

Although BMW has not officially confirmed details of the new SUV, updates will be provided when the company responds to inquiries.
